Fall Home Checklist

4:28 pm

nj home remodeling

We see the signs of fall all around us. With home ownership comes seasonal maintenance. Know what to do to get your home prepared for cooler weather.

  • Check home safety devices. The batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide devices should be replaced. Test all devices.
  • Winterize your air conditioning. A central air unit requires a cover on the outdoor unit. Window units should be removed or covered to prevent a blast of cold air.
  • Inspect your furnace. An HVAC professional can check for leaks, heating efficiency and change the filter, in addition to running a carbon monoxide check.
  • Prepare humidifiers. Humidifiers are often used when the air becomes too dry to be comfortable during cooler periods. Ensure that their contribution is clean and safe. Replace any old filters. Clean inner compartments with vinegar or another solution.
  • Clean out the gutters. Remove leaves, debris, and nests from gutters and look carefully for any leaks. You can either do this yourself or hire a service to handle it for you.
  • Check the siding. Look for signs of cracks or holes in the siding. Minor issues can be repaired yourself or you can contract a professional to help.
  • Look over your roof. Perform a visual inspection from the ground. You can use a pair of binoculars to see your roof in more detail or climb up on a ladder to get a good view. Be on the lookout for loose, cracked or missing shingles. Flat roofs might require the removal of built-up debris.
  • Review your water drainage systems. Remove any obstructions from downspouts and make sure that water is able to move away from the foundation of your home, your driveway or walkways. An additional extension may be necessary to direct the accumulated rainwater away from the home.
  • Inspect your sprinklers and irrigation system. Ensuring that the irrigation system is drained and checked is necessary in colder climates. A professional should perform repairs and mark those sprinkler heads close to a snow removal area.
  • Maintain the chimney and fireplace. For homeowners that enjoy a wood fireplace, the chimney needs to be cleaned and professionally inspected.
  • Change and repair windows and doors. Storm windows and doors should replace screens. All caulk and seals need to be inspected around doors and windows. While there, check for drafts as well. Minor caulking can be done yourself.

Ensure the integrity of your investment with seasonal maintenance.

Are You Prepared For Hurricane Joaquin? 5 Tips

1:52 pm

With a potentially hazardous hurricane on the way, it’s important we all prepare for the worst. As major coastal towns and cities have made preparations, we must also ensure we are prepared in the home.

Below, five tips to ensure your home and family remain safe during the coming storm:

  1. Power up: Ensure that all of your battery powered devices are charged, and that you purchase extra batteries. These include cellphones, flashlights, and radios. For families with many portable electronics, you may want to consider picking up some of these portable batteries.
  2. Stay hydrated: Hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Purchase enough water so that each family member will have multiple litres per day during the duration of the storm. Tap water may become contaminated during major storms.
  3. Gas up: Gas up your car, and fill your propane tank. This will allow your family an escape route if needed as well as a means to prepare food and purify water.
  4. Tend to the yard: While this may not be top-of-mind for many in this type of situation, it is important to make sure your yard is free of materials that may cause harm to the home or others. Ensure your lawn furniture is secured or brought into the garage. Additionally, remove all loose limbs from trees. It’s better you take them down than the hurricane winds pull them down, causing damage.
  5. Hit the ATM: While we are used to living in a plastic powered world, many establishments may lose power during this upcoming storm. Ensure you have enough cash on hand for whatever you may need.

Lawn Care Tips: The Essentials

7:09 pm

As the weather continues to warm up and summer approaches, many homeowners will begin to start preparing their lawns for the season. If you are a new homeowner, or have not paid much mind to the appearance and health of your lawn, these tips should prove useful.

nj home remodeling

Below are the essential lawn grooming actions we recommend adopting into your routine this season in order to maintain a beautiful landscape:

Weed It: Throughout the spring and perhaps throughout previous years, weeds will accumulate within your lawn and along the boarders. In order to start clean, remove all weeds.

Fertilize: If your lawn is looking a bit patchy or unhealthy, we recommend using fertilizer where necessary. This will give your lawn the nutrients it needs. We recommend acting quickly on this step as it is ideal to fertilize in the spring months.

Plant Grass: Whether you are starting from scratch or simply have some bare spots throughout your yard, planting new grass seeds will help keep your lawn looking lush. Follow instructions on your bag of seed as they differ between seed type.

Hydrate: Ensure your lawn stays hydrated, especially if your lawn is new and young. Your lawn should be watered 2-3 times week when there is no rain fall.

Groom: In order to maintain a tame appearance and also to aide in distributing nutrients, ensure you mow your lawn regularly.

Kitchen Colors: Top Picks

5:03 pm

Undergoing a NJ kitchen remodeling project is a very exciting process. We love taking customers’ visions and  turning them into realities. While the entire project consists of many many steps, including the gutting, design, and materials acquisition; today we wanted to focus one aspect and one aspect only – color.

When choosing colors for your kitchen, you must take the feel of your home into account. The general theme of the kitchen should match that of the home. Let’s take a look at a few different colors and their properties below. This will help you get a better idea of which colors you may chose when it comes time for a remodeling.

White: White is one of the most prominent and classy selections when it comes to kitchen color. The white kitchen features a pristine and classy feel. Pairing white walls with white appliances maximizes effect.

Gray: Gray can be seen as one of the most neutral colors. In the kitchen, gray is the best choice when you are dealing with many dark colored appliances and perhaps a dark backsplash. A lighter gray is also a good choice when you are dealing with a minuscule amount of natural light.

Red: We have seen an increase in the amount of red used within the kitchen in recent years. Using red along with stainless appliances can really spice up the room.

Blue: Shades of blue, while not a very common kitchen choice, can be brought to life in the right conditions. For example, if your kitchen features solely northern exposure, it can compliment the cool feel from the indirect light a great deal.

While incorporating exciting colors in the kitchen is a great way to spice things up, keeping the kitchen neutral is more often than not a safe and smart choice, especially when torn between multiple options. Get in touch today to start planning your perfect kitchen! 973-636-0100

Home Trends in 2015: The Kitchen

5:39 pm

Home design is constantly evolving. As new ideas emerge, new trends are born. While classic designs remain prominent throughout, more modern ideas come forward. As a company that specializes in NJ kitchen remodeling projects, we stay up to date with what’s happening in the field. Whether purely cosmetic trends or new functionalities worked into design, the industry is expansive, and the options – endless.

Today we’d like to take a look at a few kitchen design trends which have been prevalent in 2015:

1. High Cabinets: Classically, we tend to see cabinets that end multiple feet below the ceiling. In recent times, we’ve seen an increase in the demand of tall cabinets which in many cases touch the ceiling of the kitchen.

2. Island cooktop / free range hoods: We’ve seen a migration in the setting of the stovetop switch from at the wall to on the island. This allows one to create a beautiful look with a free range hood above the island.

3. Contrasting colors: Another trend many have taken to in recent times is heavily contrasting colors. For example, mahogany cabinetry with a pale to white backsplash in the kitchen.

4. Mixed counters: Whether on your kitchen island or classic counters flush against the wall, mixing materials on countertops has been seen as a recent trend in kitchen design. An island can double as an eatery by splitting between wood and tile. This creates a beautiful aesthetic.

These are just a handful of recent trends. To learn more about kitchen remodeling and different options for your home, get in touch with the professionals at Trade Mark Design & Build today! 973-636-0100

Gutter Cleaning 101: The Basics

4:46 pm

Spring is in full swing and many home owners have been partaking in the normal cleaning routine for the season. One aspect of spring cleaning often overlooked? Gutters. Failing to clean your gutters properly can result in home damage, particularly your roof. Additionally, unattended debris can serve as a structural and fire hazard.

gutter

Here are some guidelines to help you get those gutters cleaned and your drainage operating properly this season:

1. Collect your supplies: For the standard job, you should only need a ladder, a bucket, a hose, and any sort of small plastic shovel or scoop to help you along the way. (Optional – a brush and some non-toxic cleaning solution)

2. Set up your ladder in a secure fashion: We recommend always having a spotter at the bottom of the ladder just in case it slips loose. The last thing you want is to get injured while cleaning.

3. Take one initial pass down the side of the home: Move your ladder in the appropriate direction each time you extend to arm’s reach (don’t overextend). Scoop out debris and place it in the bucket.

4. Dispose of debris: When finished removing the initial debris, add it to your compost pile or find a space on your property to dispose of it in a convenient manner. (If you don’t have a compost pile, gutter debris would make a great start to one!)

5. Clean off buildup: Those of you concerned with the appearance of your gutters can make another pass along using the same bucket, but this time filled with cleaning solution. Scrub your gutters to get rid of any buildup.

6. Rinse your gutters: This will ensure they are draining properly as well as wash off any cleaning solution if you decided to move forward with scrubbing.

We hope these instructions were helpful. Though a relatively easy task, it’s one forgotten far too often.

nj home additions

Today we wanted to take some time to share with you the beauty of adding a deck to your home. Take a look at 3 reasons you should consider a deck addition to your residence:

  1. Extra Space – This is the most prominent of reasons. Having a deck allows you to make the most of unused space. Your home deck can be a mini-getaway of sorts. Having a deck adds extra space to your living quarters – beautiful outdoor space you can use for reading, sunbathing, and recreation.
  2. Family meals outdoors – Make the most of the warmer months by expanding your dining capabilities. Not only would a deck provide a perfect space to have dinner all together as a family, but to also host barbecues with all of your loved ones and friends!
  3. Increased value – While this holds true for most home remodeling projects and additions, a quality deck in most cases will increase the overall value of your home.
