11 Makeover Tips to Make Your Home Sparkle This Spring

11:49 am
Spring is a season of renewal, and after the long winter months spent indoors, you are ready to give your home a much need sprucing up. If a complete NJ home remodeling project doesn’t fit your budget or schedule at the moment, don’t worry. There are several smaller renovations you can do that will give your home a sparkling new look and feel this spring.

An Accent Wall

You can create an accent wall in any room of your home in order to give the entire space a fresh new look. This can be done by painting one wall in a different color or by adding texture. Depending on which wall you choose, it can create a very dramatic appearance or it can simply make a room look larger.

The first thing you need to do is choose the room and the wall to change. A living area can actually look longer if you choose a narrow wall at the end of the room. In a bedroom you can pick the wall behind the bed. Painting is the least expensive option, but adding texture with stone, brick, or wood panels can be amazing.

Upgrade the Fireplace

The fireplace is an attractive centerpiece in any room, but the same old look can grow tiring after many years. A new mantle is a quick and easy way to provide your fireplace with a spring makeover. There are many businesses that manufacture pre-made mantles that can be installed or you can hire a craftsman to custom make a new one.

A simpler project would be to change the fireplace surround or screen. The face of the fireplace can be resurfaced with stone, brick, or carved wood. There are even specially made paints for masonry work that you could use to change the overall color of the existing brick. A new screen that compliments the feel of the room will be the perfect finishing touch.

A Screen Door

The front door is the main focal point when it comes to the exterior of your home. It should draw attention without looking out of place, and it needs to welcome family and friends inside. Even the most beautiful front door can look less than attractive when it is hiding behind an old storm door. You can replace a tired screen door with a full view glass screen door. If you haven’t shopped for a screen door in quite a while, you will be surprised at all of the options that are available. Special features like a screen that rolls up into the door add convenience and allow you to open the front door to let in natural light on warm days.

Refinish Hardwood Floors

Over time, a hardwood floor can begin to look dull and lifeless. Once the surface is scratched and the top layer of finish wears down, you are left with a floor that is far from attractive. A scruffy floor can actually make the entire room look less appealing. Fortunately, you can have them refinished in order to bring back that brand new look and feel.

Your contractor can help you locate the right people for the project. These flooring experts will come in and buff out all of the scratches and reapply several coats of polyurethane to protect the surface. If your floor has suffered more than just the typical wear and tear, they may need to completely sand the surface down to the natural wood.

Add Beauty to the Foundation

Curb appeal is important. It increases the value of the house. Most homeowners take the time to do necessary repairs when doing a spring makeover, but the foundation is often forgotten. If your foundation is the typical cement blocks that many homes are resting upon, there are ways to give it an elevated look. By adding cultured stone to the foundation walls, you are creating a beautiful base that makes the entire house look better. You can choose from simple brick patterns to textured natural stone finishes. Depending on the stone you choose, you can create a sleek and modern look as well as a country cottage style.

Architectural Mouldings

Architectural mouldings can be the finishing touch you need. These trim pieces add a look of elegance that is otherwise missing while giving your room a fished appearance with nice clean lines. For example, place a chair rail around the entire room and add wainscot panels underneath for a look that can be formal or casual depending on the colors and style you choose. Crown moulding placed along the top of the walls will add visual interest to the space. These details can be used in any room in your house. They add charm to the bedroom and are perfect in a bathroom. When architectural mouldings are used in the kitchen, they tend to soften the look of so many hard surfaces.

A New Bath Vanity

It is hard to spruce up a bathroom without doing a complete renovation, but sometimes a simple change makes a huge difference. The sink, surrounding countertop, and underneath cabinetry is the focal point of this room. Replacing them can completely change the space, making you feel like it was remodeled.

Do you have a pedestal sink that leaves you with no storage or counter space? You can have a small vanity installed that won’t take up more space but will provide you with some hidden storage underneath as well as a small counter that frames the sink itself. When space is at a minimum, consider a vanity that is the same size as what you already have but includes shelves and drawers for better organization.

Kitchen Cabinetry

The kitchen cabinetry often over powers everything else in this room. It is important that it looks fresh and updated. If your drawers and cupboards are scratched, worn, or outdated, consider having them replaced. Modern designs allow you to go beyond the traditional wood tones with painted surfaces that are easy to clean. You can combine two colors for a more interesting look, or simply stick with a monochromatic design.

How you use these colors and wood tones will completely change the look and feel of your kitchen. Use darker colors or wood tones to create a cozy, warm environment. The modern bright whites that are being used in the latest farmhouse styles will open up smaller spaces without having to take down walls.

A Porch Makeover

Completely renovating the front porch would be amazing, but it isn’t always necessary. You can give the exterior of your home a much needed boost by simply upgrading a few of the features found on the front porch. Tackle this project by thinking of the porch as another room in your home. Start at the top, and work your way down. Sanding and painting the ceiling immediately updates this area. Add interest to the walls with a fresh coat of paint or have a stone wall installed. Refinish the floor with the same care as you would inside. Masonry paints can be used on concrete while garage and porch floor paint can quickly upgrade a worn wood surface. Finish the transformation by adding little details like a new railing, flower boxes, or built-in seating.

New Shutters

Your home may have shutters that are faded and look outdated. You could even be living in a house that never had shutters in the first place. Having new shutters installed along the sides of each window are an easy and affordable way to give the front of the house a makeover. Just like you would hang curtains or drapes up around the interior of the windows, shutters give the exterior of the window a finished look. Once you begin discussing your options with your contractor, you will discover plenty to choose from. Vinyl shutters eliminate the need to re-paint each year and are lightweight. They come in traditional louvered designs as well as rustic country styles that are less formal. Choose a color that coordinates with the existing trim work you already have on the house.

Elevated Lighting

Sometimes it isn’t the décor or the architecture in a home that needs sprucing up. It could be a matter of lighting. If the rooms in your home don’t have adequate lighting, they won’t be beautiful or functional. There are three types of lighting you need in every part of your home. This includes task lighting, general lighting, and accent lighting. General lighting would be the main ceiling light. It illuminates the space. Task lighting allows you to use the room for its intended purpose. For example, under cabinet lighting in the kitchen, vanity lights in the bathroom, or table lamps in the bedroom and living area. Finish with accent lighting over wall art, in curio cupboards, and in dark corners.

NJ Home Remodeling With Big Style For Small Spaces

3:01 am

If you are like most people, you don’t think that big style can be accomplished in a small NJ Home Remodeling Project. When one hears someone talk about a stylish kitchen or bathroom, they automatically envision a large, expansive area. In reality, you will have an easier time creating a stylish space in a smaller home.

Small spaces are simply an opportunity to splurge on high-end finishes since the amount of materials needed is much less than with a large room. For example, hardwood floors are beautiful, but they can cost a fortune in a large great room. Use hard wood flooring in a small kitchen, and you have a designer look without the hefty price tag.

A Small Bathroom Remodel

The more floor space you can see, the larger a room will look. To keep your small bathroom from looking cramped and cluttered, open up the floors. Switch your traditional tub out for a vintage style claw foot one instead, and trade your vanity for a pedestal sink. Allowing your bathroom remodeling contractor to make these simple changes will give the illusion of a larger room instantly.

There are other ways to give your small bathroom the appearance of having more space too. Use mirrors as a surround for the tub, and if all you have is a shower, install a clear glass door. Both of these ideas allow the eye to travel further which tricks the mind into thinking the area is bigger than it actually is.

Make the most of your vertical space, especially when looking for additional storage. Open shelving that goes from the floor to the ceiling provides plenty of room to store towels and bath essentials in decorative baskets. Limit the wall decor. Instead of many separate framed prints, cover one entire wall with tiles arranged in a stylish pattern.

Corner Stove Kitchen

A Tiny Kitchen Renovation

Professional NJ Home Remodeling Experts can recreate your small kitchen in a way that features well thought out design elements that make this space feel much larger. For example, opening up one wall into the adjacent room will give you more work-space while giving the impression of a much larger kitchen. Replace the wall with a counter. Add seating on the opposite side so friends and family can join you without being underfoot.

Allowing as much natural light as possible to enter a tiny kitchen adds an open and airy feeling to the room. Minimize window treatments. Instead, paint the trim in an accent color to frame the glass. A skylight will also bring the sunshine indoors while giving you the illusion of being in a wide open area.

Just like in a small bathroom, decorative pieces will make the space look cluttered. Find ways to add a personal touch without bringing in artwork or tabletop decor. A stylish tile backsplash replaces wall art while being functional. Switch out old drawer pulls and handles for something new and modern.

Wine Cellar Construction in Saddle River, New Jersey

A Compact Custom Wine Cellar

Don’t think that the ability to have a special place to store your favorite wines is a luxury reserved for those in large houses. Even the smallest homes have an empty corner that could be utilized for just such a feature. Even an unused portion of the basement will suffice.

Be creative when it comes to wine storage. The simple addition of floor to ceiling shelving on two walls that meet in a corner can become the perfect place to rest bottles. Arrange two chairs in front of the shelving with a small table between them, and you will have a cozy spot to entertain.

Some homeowners are willing to think outside of the box. Adding a small refrigerator, wine racks, and shelves to hold glasses inside of a closet allows you the ideal place to mix drinks. When you are not serving beverages to friends, the entire wine stock is out of sight. The best part is that it doesn’t take up any of your precious space within your small home.

Custom Home Bars

The Fitted Custom Home Bar

If you are looking for something more casual for your NJ Home Remodeling Project, you can create a custom home bar in your family room, dining room, or rec room. There are many stylish bar designs available that provide a small counter with bar stools that fit underneath. On the back side, you will have a shelf where you can mix drinks along with plenty of drawers and cupboard space for storage.

Homeowners with small children in the house like to make this spot a family friendly area by incorporating wine racks overhead where the kids can’t reach. Small refrigerators can be placed under the back side of the bar for water and sodas that can be used in mixed drinks but are still safe for children.

To best utilize your limited amount of space, turn the bar at an angle across an unused corner. This leaves the illusion of a larger room, and allows the bar to actually become a focal point, much like a fireplace would. Mirrors hung on the wall behind the bar open up the space further.

Home remodel planning checklist

1:50 pm

When planning a home remodeling project, whether you are remodeling a kitchen, increasing the size of your home with an addition or replacing your kitchen cabinets, it is important to plan ahead. Knowing where to start, how to budget, and who to contract for the work can be overwhelming. This home remodel planning checklist below will help you in your project planning.

Home Remodel Planning Checklist

  1. Create a scope of work "Wish List"
  2. Have a good idea of what you can invest in the project
  3. Obtain price quotes from qualified professionals
  4. Research and interview potential contractors
  5. Establish a project timeline and a production schedule
  6. Choose a home remodeling contractor to start your project!

Creating a scope of work for your home remodeling project

A scope of work is basically your home remodeling “wish list” with some additional defined criteria that will help you later on when its time to get bids for the work. The natural progression of a scope of work would begin with the demolition, followed by rough framing, rough mechanicals, insulation, sheetrock, Floor coverings, finish carpentry/cabinetry, countertops and end with painting.

How to budget for a home remodeling project

Armed with the scope of work you are now ready to get some pricing for your project. The bidding process will vary depending on what type of home remodeling project you’re looking to have done. Smaller projects like a countertop replacement can be can be quoted by going directly to the countertop supplier of your choosing and supply them with your requirements. Larger home remodeling projects like a Home addition or a kitchen remodel will require multiple sources (appliances, plumbing fixtures, tile, ect.) and you’ll need to hire a home remodeling contractor that is familiar with your type of project.

Finding the right home remodeling contractor

At this point you have a good understanding of what it is you want to remodel and how much you are willing to spend on the project, now it's time to choose a home remodeling contractor to work with on your project. Look for a good online presence, read their reviews of what others have said about them, review their portfolio to see their past work - make sure it meets your expectations and goals. Some places to check for this info are as follows; Google Business listings, Houzz and Yelp Business listings. Houzz is a great place to read reviews and view portfolios. Navigate to the "Find Professionals" at the top of the page, select the type of professional you are looking for, then set the parameters for the geographical search area. This is also a great way to qualify referrals you may have received from family and friends. After you have decided on a few home remodeling contractors to interview, don't forget to ask for some past clients contact info so you can speak to them directly.

Home Remodel project timeline and production scheduling

During your interview with the home remodeling contractor be sure to ask how long the proposed project will take based on similar past projects. There are many factors that contribute to how long a home remodeling project will take - town requirements, custom cabinets, back ordered items, ect. so each project will have its own timeline that will need to be calculated by the contractor before the work begins. Generally speaking a kitchen remodel would be considered very fast with a production schedule at 5 weeks and typically takes about 7 weeks to complete.

Surviving Your Remodeling

3:29 pm

You bit the bullet and decided to remodel the kitchen. Congratulations! Ideally, you have hired a professional NJ kitchen remodeler to do the job (us of course). Remodeling an entire kitchen is not a DIY job. Hiring respected and competent professionals will ensure that the process goes smoothly from start to finish. Still, home remodeling of any kind is a significant disruption to your daily living. Surviving a kitchen renovation requires preparation. Therefore, here is your cheat sheet for living to tell the tale of your renovation.

Staying Sane Through Kitchen Remodeling:

  1. Accept the fact that it will almost invariably take longer than you planned for. If you know this going into the process, you will suffer less sleepless nights.
  2. Isolate from the dirt and noise. Seal off the doorways and openings. Get a portable toilet for the workers to use. Keep the rest of your life away from the mess and chaos of the New Jersey home remodeling.
  3. For their health and safety, keep children and pets away from the debris.
  4. Set clear start and end times for the workers. Having a set schedule you can work around will go a long way towards helping you stay sane throughout the process.
  5. Set up a room as a temporary kitchen by moving your old appliances to that location.
  6. Finally, be nice and professional with everyone, even the workers. You get what you give in life. The same goes in renovations. The nicer you are to people, the more they want to please you.

Planning Your Dream Bathroom

4:36 pm

Before calling in a New Jersey home remodeling company, you will need to take both practical and design considerations into account as you plan your dream bathroom renovation. While, initially, the task might seem overwhelming, it truly does not have to be. By creating a budget, researching the newest trends in bathroom renovations and planning useful added features, you can transform your bathroom in just a couple weeks. To make it even easier, we have highlighted some general guidelines.

First, plan a realistic timeline. You should allow about two days for demolishing the old bathroom and two days eachfor carpentry, plumbing, flooring and drywall. Tiling usually takes the longest: about three days. Elements such as cabinets, fixtures, insulation, drywall and electrical work usually do not take more than a day. You are looking at roughly two weeks, but allowing for extra time is never a bad idea when it comes to NJ home remodeling.

Decide on tiling, wallpaper styles and a color scheme. Whites and grays tend to give bathrooms a sleek, modern appearance that some find appealing. Others, however, want a bathroom full of rich colors like red or lavender.

The last step is to draw a sketch. Consider the placements of lights and mirrors, take accurate measurements of your bathroom space and draw your plan to scale. This will help the professionals carry out your vision.

Take these steps and your bathroom renovations should be a breeze.
