3 Steps to Renovating your Kitchen

9:27 pm
3 Steps to Renovating your Kitchen

Step 1: Think About What You Want Out Of The Kitchen Renovation

The first step is all about how you use your kitchen. What do you like to do in there aside from cooking? Does your family use it as a hangout? Find the layout and features that best suit your household’s needs and style. There are tons of resources out there to help you. Think about kitchen additions, like islands, pantry storage solutions and task lighting. What about your kitchen footprint, is it easy to move around in?  Look for opportunities to create a more efficient Layout,  increasing the functionality and storage at the same time. If you like to do a certain type of cooking, for example, you like canning your own jams, is your kitchen layout set up for it? Start saving photos from magazine clippings and online sources that feature your style.  It’s a good idea to keep your ideas organized with notes as to what in the photograph appeals to you.  Being able to accurately convey what ideas are most important to you to your kitchen designer will go a long way in the end – producing a much better overall finished kitchen renovation.

Step 2: Research and Planning A Kitchen Renovation

While estimating what renovation costs will be is a profession on it’s own, it’ll be helpful to think about your estimated budget. Perhaps you have been saving for an entire year, what are those savings, and are you willing to pull in funds from other sources, thinking about budgeting before the project will ease your worries. As a homeowner, you’re not expected to know what everything should cost, it’s the job of the renovating professionals to educate you on the process, the material, and plan the entire scope of the project.

Some people begin their research by visiting our showroom, where you can see everything. We are available to help you with every aspect of the project – from space planning, budgets, shopping and ordering products, choosing finishes and textures, even helping you set up a temporary kitchen while the work is being done, having a professional on your side is absolutely key to the success of your renovation.  There are also plenty of online resources available for you to research your kitchen renovation in terms of cost and project, although you do have to be careful because these figures are averages of kitchen renovation and do not necessarily translate to your particular  kitchen renovation.  Nothing will be as accurate as an actual design and for your space.

Step 3: Kitchen Renovation Design and Development

Once you’ve decided on what your dream kitchen looks like, you can proceed to implementing your design choices.  Kitchen cabinetry, backsplash tile, kitchen countertops, floor coverings, plumbing and electrical selections are all detailed in sketches along with space planning, floor plans with cabinet sizes, etc – all these technical factors come in once the design aspects are covered.  An in-depth review of the material selections takes place and finishes are assigned to specific surfaces, making your kitchen renovation one step closer to being realized.

Once the development phase begins, you have to make sure your family is well prepared for the transition.  It will only be a short while before the kitchen renovation begins so it’s perfect timing to start thinking about how your family will  call about daily activities while the kitchen renovation takes place. While we focus on efficient projects, meaning getting the job done properly and in good timing, we always want to make sure that enough time is allocated to ensure a job well done.  Each projects build time will vary based on specific conditions but in general a kitchen renovation could take anywhere from 4 to 7 weeks to complete. Prepare your household for a temporary shift in it’s natural habitat.  Preparing meals in advance of the kitchen renovation will help ease the transition.

Overall, a kitchen renovation is exciting for everyone  with proper planning and guidance. With our selection of kitchen cabinets in New Jersey we’re sure you will find something everyone will agree on.  And with a lifetime manufacturer’s warranty,  you’ll have peace of mind knowing your investment in your home is safe.

What to Consider When Choosing a Cabinet Finish

7:32 pm

Whether you’re looking to freshen up a drab kitchen interior or aiming to sell a home on the market, it can be difficult to choose the right cabinet finish.  A cabinet finish that coordinates with the rest of the desired kitchen elements and appliances in a tasteful way will help you see the best return on your investment.

custom kitchen cabinets

Keep in mind these options below as you plan your remodeling project:

Unfinished Cabinets

Homeowners may choose manufactured wood doors and drawer fronts that are unfinished. This may first appear to be a less expensive choice, but the costs will accrue when homeowners prep and paint them. Any preliminary savings are lost. Keep in mind that any hand painted kitchen requires a coat of acrylic lacquer for protection.

Wood Finishes

Wood is a versatile option for homeowners. It has a broad appeal and is a classic option. For those looking to eventually sell a home, wood makes a timeless choice. We craft cabinets from many different types of wood. Take a deeper look here.

Painted Cabinets

Paint is heavily pigmented. The underlying wood will not show through. White, cream and eggshell colors are popular. Eggshell is a warm finish that reflects light well and can be easily cleaned.

Stained Cabinets

Stains come in an array of pigments. The wood grain will show through and stains will appear darker on the wood’s natural knots and whirls. Using stain can help modify the appearance of many different types of wood cabints

Glazed Cabinets

A glaze is semi-transparent application available to apply over paints. Glazes help provide depth to the cabinetry. Homeowners benefit from more contrast but less consistency. Any details and crevices will be highlighted with a glaze application.

Antiqued Cabinets

When homeowners select an antiqued patina, they are looking for cabinetry that exudes the appearance of wear over time. These patinas are hand-rubbed and as such each cabinet door or drawer will be unique. Those looking for a more rustic look may consider this type of cabinet finish.

Distressed Cabinets

There are a variety of techniques available for homeowners that choose to distress their cabinetry. The wood’s surface will be scored and give the appearance of age and a more weathered patina.

Kitchen Design Trends in 2016

5:37 pm

Many people look at a new year as an opportunity to make changes in their lives.  One improvement that many people will make is to complete projects in the home that they have been putting off. One of the most important improvements homeowners can make is redoing their kitchen.  A kitchen remodel adds value to a home, and often adds convenience and improves quality of life for homeowners.

Kitchen trends in 2016

  • Shaker style kitchens:  Shaker kitchens have minimalist look with clean lines and an uncluttered feel. Shaker cabinets tend to be simple without as many elegant looking trims that draw the eye.  The natural wood qualities of a cabinet come through, although often these cabinets are painted a simple white.  If molding is included in the cabinet design, they are not ornate.

  • Gourmet kitchens:  As long as food television networks are popular, people will be willing to try more complicated food fare.  Gourmet kitchens can make that process easier.  Kitchens in this style, through ease in the kitchen layout, enhance the process of meal preparation.  Often, these kitchens require more space and higher-end appliances, but people who opt for this style love it. Featuring modern elements with natural earth tones, we have seen a rise in this style over the past year.

  • Transitional style kitchens:  The transitional style kitchen is a new(er) fusion that has been growing in popularity. Featuring the warmth and welcoming feelings of a traditional kitchen paired with simple lines and contemporary elements, this style offers the best of both worlds. When blended together, these two styles have created a stylish space. Lazy Susan’s and open shelving are often incorporated into this style of kitchen so that foods and ingredients can easily be found and accessed.

  • Added work or home office spaces:  One of the most common trends in new-built homes from last year was adding a desk or some other home-office space as part of a kitchen’s design.  This provides children with a great place to do homework while a parent is preparing a meal, and it provides anyone with work to do a place that is quiet most of the time after meals have been prepared.

If a new kitchen is on the to-do-list for 2016, consider one of these forward looking designs.  Even if you don’t fall in love with one particular design concept, we will help incorporate aspects to build the kitchen of your dreams.

Artistic Tile: Slab Gallery Opening in Secaucus

6:49 pm
We recently had the pleasure of attending the grand opening of Artistic Tile’s slab showroom in Secaucus, NJ. Artistic Tile is one of the largest wholesale distributors of luxury stone and tile in the United States. And, as one of our trusted suppliers of tiles, we were very excited to attend.
Upon arriving at the event, we couldn’t believe the sheer number of different materials and variations on display. Ranging from glass, to ceramic, to a large assortment of different stone, we had quite the time taking a look at their various offerings.

Kitchen Colors: Top Picks

5:03 pm

Undergoing a NJ kitchen remodeling project is a very exciting process. We love taking customers’ visions and  turning them into realities. While the entire project consists of many many steps, including the gutting, design, and materials acquisition; today we wanted to focus one aspect and one aspect only – color.

When choosing colors for your kitchen, you must take the feel of your home into account. The general theme of the kitchen should match that of the home. Let’s take a look at a few different colors and their properties below. This will help you get a better idea of which colors you may chose when it comes time for a remodeling.

White: White is one of the most prominent and classy selections when it comes to kitchen color. The white kitchen features a pristine and classy feel. Pairing white walls with white appliances maximizes effect.

Gray: Gray can be seen as one of the most neutral colors. In the kitchen, gray is the best choice when you are dealing with many dark colored appliances and perhaps a dark backsplash. A lighter gray is also a good choice when you are dealing with a minuscule amount of natural light.

Red: We have seen an increase in the amount of red used within the kitchen in recent years. Using red along with stainless appliances can really spice up the room.

NJ Kitchen Remodeling Company

Blue: Shades of blue, while not a very common kitchen choice, can be brought to life in the right conditions. For example, if your kitchen features solely northern exposure, it can compliment the cool feel from the indirect light a great deal.

While incorporating exciting colors in the kitchen is a great way to spice things up, keeping the kitchen neutral is more often than not a safe and smart choice, especially when torn between multiple options. Get in touch today to start planning your perfect kitchen! 973-636-0100

Home Trends in 2015: The Kitchen

5:39 pm

Home design is constantly evolving. As new ideas emerge, new trends are born. While classic designs remain prominent throughout, more modern ideas come forward. As a company that specializes in NJ kitchen remodeling projects, we stay up to date with what’s happening in the field. Whether purely cosmetic trends or new functionalities worked into design, the industry is expansive, and the options – endless.

Today we’d like to take a look at a few kitchen design trends which have been prevalent in 2015:

1. High Cabinets: Classically, we tend to see cabinets that end multiple feet below the ceiling. In recent times, we’ve seen an increase in the demand of tall cabinets which in many cases touch the ceiling of the kitchen.

IMG_5635

2. Island cooktop / free range hoods: We’ve seen a migration in the setting of the stovetop switch from at the wall to on the island. This allows one to create a beautiful look with a free range hood above the island.

IMG_4729

3. Contrasting colors: Another trend many have taken to in recent times is heavily contrasting colors. For example, mahogany cabinetry with a pale to white backsplash in the kitchen.

4. Mixed counters: Whether on your kitchen island or classic counters flush against the wall, mixing materials on countertops has been seen as a recent trend in kitchen design. An island can double as an eatery by splitting between wood and tile. This creates a beautiful aesthetic.

These are just a handful of recent trends. To learn more about kitchen remodeling and different options for your home, get in touch with the professionals at Trade Mark Design & Build today! 973-636-0100

Becoming The Host With The Most

5:20 pm

Everyone wants the perfect home with the most amazing layout and the most admirable qualities. Many times, getting there can be a long process. One driving force within the desire to enhance your space is the yearning to have complete hosting abilities.

Especially with the weather beginning to warm up (slowly but surely), many families will begin to host their friends, family, and associates at their residences. A common roadblock many experience when hosting is the lack of room or cluttered layout of the home.

nj home remodeling

Today we’d like to provide our readers with some tips on how to enhance their homes as to improve their hosting capabilities:

  1. Play with furniture: The layout of a room such as the living room can make or break the flow of the space. Do some research on different interior design theories and spend a day moving around your furniture. What once may seem like a cluttered room can be transformed into an open space conducive to having company with just a few alterations.
  2. Remodel your kitchen: The kitchen, whether intended or not, is the room in the home most guests will migrate to during a gathering. Ensuring you have ample space to both prepare food and socialize in this room will ensure guests are comfortable. To learn more about our NJ kitchen remodeling capabilities, give us a call.
  3. Make use of the outdoors: Expand your gathering into the yard. Simply purchase some lawn furniture to transform your lawn into an area to comfortably enjoy company and the great outdoors. For those with a budget, consider the addition of a deck to the back of your home!
